Glasses Q&A

When do I need glasses?

Glasses are an effective way to improve and sharpen your vision if you have nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism. Glasses can also correct presbyopia, an age-related loss of up-close vision.

Bloomberg Eyecare offers routine eye exams and visual acuity tests to determine if it’s time for you to get a pair of prescription glasses for general use or specific activities, like computer use and reading, or to update a prescription. You typically schedule these exams once a year to ensure good eye health and high-quality vision.

You should also schedule an eye exam for glasses if you have:

  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Distorted vision
  • Frequent headaches
  • Persistently tired or irritated eyes
  • Difficulty seeing at night

You may also need prescription glasses if you tend to squint a lot when looking at objects up-close or far away.

Bloomberg Eyecare also provides customized eye exams for children who are six months old and older. These exams can identify potential vision issues in your child early to prevent complications as they get older. The optometrists can also fit your child with prescription glasses if needed.

What happens during an eye exam for glasses?

If you don’t currently wear glasses or are experiencing vision issues with your current prescription, your Bloomberg Eyecare optometrist provides a comprehensive eye exam to find your perfect prescription strength.

During the exam, your optometrist evaluates your overall eye health to ensure you don’t have any signs of eye damage, infection, or eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or macular degeneration.

They also perform a visual acuity test that involves reading letters on a wall chart while you look through a variety of prescription lenses.

Based on the results of your tests, your optometrist determines your glasses’ prescription, and you can shop for a pair of stylish frames in the office.
